  Venturing Scout Advancement and Awards

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade and are under 21 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

A Venturer who has achieved the First Class rank in a troop may continue working toward the Eagle Scout rank as a Venturer until their 18th birthday. There is no alternate Venturing advancement route to qualify for the Eagle Scout rank. The Venturer requirements for rank advancement towards Eagle Scout are the same as for Scouts BSA. The Venturer may fulfill leadership requirements by serving as president, vice-president, secretary or treasurer of the crew. The Scoutmaster conference will be conducted by the crew advisor. As a Venturer meets the requirements for Star and Life ranks, a board of review is conducted by the crew committee. The Eagle Scout board of review follows the procedure established by the district advancement committee.

Boards of Review for Venturing, Discovery and Pathfinder Awards

Boards of review for these awards are handled by each crew in accordance with national policy. Information concerning national policy is located in The Guide to Advancement, sections 4.3.0.0 through 4.3.4.0 (Mechanics of Advancement in Venturing) and sections 8.0.5.0 through 8.0.7.2 (Venturing Board of Reviews and Particular for each Venturing award).

Venturing Summit Award Service Project

This project has a workbook, which can be found here. The Venturing Summit Award Service Project proposals are reviewed and approved by the Crew Advisor, the project beneficiary and "a designated crew member", who is a Venturer (youth). As expressly stated in The Guide to Advancement, section 4.3.2.1 "Councils and districts do not play a role in reviewing or approving Venturing Summit Awards service projects".Venturers or Crew Advisors may consult with others, like district or council representatives with knowledge of the service projects and the workbook; however, approval by a district or council representative is neither required nor permitted.

Venturing Summit Award Service Project Fundraising Application, which is located in the project workbook, must be approved by the project beneficiary, the Crew Advisor and an authorized council representative. For the application, the authorized council representatives are: the Venturer's Crew Committee Chair, any district advancement chair, members of district advancement committees (that approve Eagle project proposals), andy Circle Ten VOA advisor or associate advisor, any member of the council advancement committee or any authorized Circle Ten Council staff.

All Venturing Summit Boards of Review are held at the council level. No district or crew of Circle Ten Council may convene a Summit Board of Review. The primary reason for this policy is that national policies (the procedures and requirements) for a Summit Board of Review are different than an Eagle Board of Review. In addition, the Summit Boards of Review are far less common; therefore, to ensure they are conducted in accordance with national policy, all Summit Boards of Review will be held at the council level.

Few adults are authorized by council to chair Circle Ten Summit Boards of Review. Please contact the council advancement chair, the Venturing Officer Association (VOA) Advisor or their respective staff advisors for the contact information of Venturing-certified representatives that may chair a Summit Board of Review. The chair will appoint and train the other members of the board of review, in accordance with national policy.

In the event additional chairs are needed for Summit Board of Review, then additional chairs may be appointed by the agreement of the council advancement chair, the VOA advisor and their respective staff advisors.

The Venturing Summit Award Application must be submitted to the council for verification before the board of review. The application is available here. The completed application is to be submitted for verification to Circle Ten.
