What is Powder Horn?

Powder Horn is designed to help the unit by introducing older youth (15 and up) and adult leaders to safely conduct outdoor/high adventure activities of a fun and challenging nature. The course provides an introduction to the resources needed to successfully lead youth through a program of outdoor adventure and is based upon giving participants an exposure to outdoor/high adventure activities. This is not a certification event. It is for any youth or adult interested in experiencing a unit-level, high adventure program.

Course Includes:

  • Safe participation in fun and challenging outdoor activities
  • An introduction to resources that can improve a unit’s program
  • Exposure to new and exciting high adventure activities
  • Help in delivering the BSA promise at the unit level
  • Promoting youth and adult creativity when delivering high adventure programs

If your program is stale or your older youth are bored….

You may need to find something new to add to your activities. But what can you add? Where do you find the resources? Is it fun? Powder Horn is the answer to these questions. The course is designed to give an introduction to several outdoor and/or high adventure activities – hands on – in a safe environment as well as resources to bring these to your units. Powder Horn is a hands-on, experiential course designed to introduce youth and adult leaders to fun and challenging outdoor/high adventure activities. The course helps Venturing and Scouts BSA youth and adult leaders implement high adventure program elements in their home units.

Circle Ten Council’s Powder Horn course is open to adult leaders in Venturing, Sea Scouting, and Scouts BSA programs. Youth leaders (15 and up) may take the course if an adult from their crew/troop/ship attends the course with them. Scouts BSA Scouts must be First Class and have Scoutmaster approval to register for the course. It is also recommended that youth leaders take the Introduction to Leadership Skills course for their program prior to taking Powder Horn.

Course Fee: $300

Course occurs in the fall over two weekends at two different Circle Ten Council Camps.

NOTE: Participants are not required to participate in any activity in which they are not comfortable.
