Scoop from Sam: New Strategic Plan Announced … Part 1

This is the first in a five-part series.

Do you know why the Circle Ten Council creates a strategic plan? The main purpose is to determine the major strategic issues confronting the council and then to shape goals and objectives to effectively address those issues. Our current strategic plan is set to end this year, therefore it was time to convene a committee to look at our current environment and develop a roadmap to achieve success in the coming years. Normally, a strategic plan covers five years; however, in this ever-changing landscape the committee determined that three years was much more feasible in responding to societal shifts.

The Strategic Plan Steering Committee included representatives from a cross section of the council as well as non-Scouting community and industry leaders. Incorporating input from key stakeholders, the committee stayed true to our values and guiding principles. In addition to the Scout Oath and Law, the Circle Ten Council values include:

  •  Commitment to the public good
  •  Accountability to the public
  •  Respect for the worth and dignity of individuals
  •  Inclusiveness
  •  Respect for pluralism and diversity
  •  Transparency, integrity and honesty
  •  Responsible stewardship of resources
  •  Commitment to excellence and to maintaining the public trust

What we know:
For over 110 years Scouting’s exciting programs and outdoor adventures have inspired lives of leadership, character and service. The Circle Ten Council is financially strong and secure. True to our mission, Scouting reflects the areas we serve in ethnic diversity and shapes our communities by developing responsible citizens while providing lifelong learning opportunities. We know that BSA has an 86% favorable brand identity nationally. We provide programs that allow, and encourage, full family involvement with programs for all youth 5-21 years old.  Scouting provides character development through the use of positive adult role models. Scouting encourages healthy living and provides lifelong learning. And our council has a very diverse geography with endless outdoor adventure opportunities. We know that the Circle Ten Council has a lot to be proud of. At the same time, we have more that we can do to reach even more youth with our positive character and leadership training. The Strategic Plan Steering Committee met throughout 2020 to develop the plan. The Circle Ten Council Executive Board approved the plan at their October board meeting. Although this plan technically starts in 2021, work has already begun in the implementation phase. Over the coming weeks, I will be sharing details on each of the four pillars, including goals, strategies, tactics and how each will be measured.

This plan affects everyone in Circle Ten Council. I encourage you to read through each of the November Scoops from Sam and learn more about how this plan will positively impact your Scouting family.
