My name is Muhammad Ikram and I am the Awards and Recognition Chair of the Northern Trail District. As you may have followed from the district newsletter, the district is inviting nominations for adult leader awards at the Unit, District, and Council levels.

Specifically:

📌At the Unit level, we have the Your Extraordinary Service Award, commonly called the YES Award. Every unit receives two nominations. Units with 50–99 youth members are entitled to an additional nomination, and units with 100 or more youth members are allowed a total of 4 nominations.

Submission deadline: Friday, January 16, 2026.

📌At the District level, we have two awards: the District Award of Merit (DAM) and the Robert E. Little Award

Nomination submission deadline: Friday, January 16, 2026.

📌At the Council level, we have the Silver Beaver Award. Applications for the Silver Beaver Award must be received no later than December 31, 2025. Deadline has passed.

I encourage you to nominate adults from your unit, or anyone you know, who have volunteered their time and resources and from whom your unit or district has benefited.

    📚 Upcoming Training

Hazardous Weather Training: 28 Minutes That Could Save a Life

In Scouting, adventure often places us outdoors—on campouts, hikes, service projects, and activities where weather can change quickly and without warning. Hazardous weather remains one of the most common and dangerous risks we face as leaders.

Hazardous Weather Training helps adult leaders recognize dangerous conditions early, make informed decisions, and take action before a situation becomes an emergency. The training prepares leaders to safely manage risks such as:

    • ⛈️ Lightning and severe storms
    • 🌪️ High winds and severe weather systems
    • 🌊 Flash flooding and heavy rainfall
    • 🔥 Extreme heat and dehydration
    • ❄️ Cold weather exposure and hypothermia

The training takes just 28 minutes to complete online, but those 28 minutes could truly save a life. Understanding when to delay activities, seek shelter, or change plans entirely can prevent injuries and emergencies before they occur.

Hazardous Weather Training is available through My.Scouting.org and is strongly encouraged for all registered adult leaders. It’s a small investment of time that reinforces the Scouting values of preparedness, responsibility, and caring for others.

Be prepared. Be informed. Be ready—before the weather turns.

    S.A.F.E. guarding Youth

Your unit can not recharter you if your S.A.F.E. guarding Youth(formerly YPT) is not current.

The new course reinforces a culture of active supervision, situational awareness, and safety. S.A.F.E. guarding Youth is 90 minutes the first time you take it, then only 15-minute annual refreshers.
