Summer Camp, a Core Scouting Experience
Time to get signed up for summer camp. Of all the activities in scouting, a week-long stay at summer camp is a vital part of the scouting experience.
Scouting is not about entertainment, scouting exists because of the aims, embodied in the scout oath, law and motto. The fun is the hook used to get scouts involved and stay involved in the program so the values, skills and character development can be instilled.
Summer camp is a chance for scouts to gain independence, build confidence, and learn to rely on themselves and their fellow scouts.
Without the summer camp experience, scouts will miss out on a big part of what scouting is all about.
A scout who has never been to summer camp has little real understanding of what to expect or the long term benefits of the experience. They will without question have a much better experience than they expect. A little encouragement may be needed, after all it can be a little overwhelming for a young scout.
Ask any seasoned scout and they will tell you that summer camp is a blast and well worth the time spent. I enjoyed my time both as a youth and adult leader at summer camp.
Get signed up today.

Incident reports—What you need to know
With the onset of spring, more units will be having campouts. While our motto is to be prepared, we must also know what to do when the unexpected happens.
Scouting America has a policy in place to report incidents and near misses.
What to do:
- Immediate Safety. Conduct an assessment to identify potential injuries or hazards. Provide first aid and if necessary, call 911. If warranted, move the individual(s) to safer area.
- Grasp the full situation. Gather information about what happened. If youth involved, inform parent(s) and guardians of situation promptly.
- Document the Incident Thoroughly. Collect all available information-the Who, What , Where, When and Why. Construct a timeline of the sequence of events leading up to and following incident. Take photos and statements of witnesses.
- Notify the Local Council. This is necessary for transparency and proper record keeping. Report to Council promptly
- Follow up with Care. Maintain open communication with families and those affected. Address any questions or concerns and ensure they feel supported.
A near miss should also be reported. A near miss is a situation that could have potentially been an incident.
